[via YouTube]

First ever sort of “instance-based quest” that I embarked on throughout my stay at PSOBB. Mine 1 was our target. I wasn’t really of much help at all; you could say that I was leeching. This dungeon wasn’t really right for me, taking into account that I was a mere level 4 – that’s just like a dutiful reporter going into the chaos to help bring you this report. This is going to be a brief and succinct report, don’t expect much. Another detailed part will be in the works soon, probably when I get bag more play time >_

Friends and coworkers alike can tell you that I have a serious problem with MMORPG’s. Every cliché surrounding the crack-like nature of their addictiveness rings true and if I’m not looking for something to level or loot to brag about, I’m in search for the most awesome of hats to compliment my latest avatar. When I read Massively I can only imagine that this is what recovering sex addicts reading Hustler must feel like.
Which brings us to this past week and my 10-day free trial of Turbine’s other forgotten RPG, Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach. Though it’s been around for almost two years now, I’ve only ever met one person who has actually played it and that was before release even. Despite a lack of anyone I know playing it, it’s somehow been popping up more and more in conversation. Maybe everyone is burnt out of what’s available and they’re not sure about the year ahead. Regardless, I wanted to see what all the fuss, or lack of, is all about.
Before I go into why this didn’t click for me, I should explain what I’m looking for: a solid PvE experience with decent customization (If I can’t be pretty, I’m not playing!) and enough superficial crap to keep me busy. Dungeons & Dragons Online gets two of the three mostly right and it even has some of the most exciting PvP combat I’ve seen in a modern MMO (seriously, Fury wishes it was like this). That third missing element though is the superficial crap. If I can’t craft or whittle or at least play a guitar, there’s not much else to do other than dungeon and possibly dragon, should I feel up to the challenge. It’s fluff, but also a necessary evil. Imagine World of Warcraft if you couldn’t make mechanical chicken robots. Yeah, I wouldn’t play either.
There’s also the needlessly convoluted user interface that’s completely unacceptable for a game that was released two years after the advent of World of Warcraft. How bad can an interface possibly be, you ask? It took me 15 minutes to figure out how to buy something from a vendor. Unlike games of the post-WoW era, Dungeons & Dragons features a completely different interface for everything you can think of. Purchasing items, selling items, buying skills, choosing quests … its all completely different. After dunking a few hours into the game, I’m still not even sure if I learned any new skills.
But would it matter? Unless you’re a dice rolling prodigy, figuring out whether or not you’ve improved comes down to solving what amounts to algebra for uber-dorks. Is this new mace going to provide you with more damage per second? To find out, simply solve p(x)=x^3 but only if +13 on saving roll (14+x) divided by how pissed off you are at not knowing whether to equip this mace or not. It’s a master craft, right? It has to be good. I can’t fault it for being Dungeons & Dragons, but I sure can for it hating anyone who doesn’t already know this stuff.
When I was down in the dungeons and tackling the unique questing structure (gotta love that dungeon master), I found myself really enjoying the experience despite the amount of hate and malice I seem to be spitting today. Dungeons & Dragons Online is definitely something I’d recommend to folks, but I don’t think I’d actually pay money for it. It seems to be lacking some real meat and we all know what the Quizno’s girl has to say about that.

I was so happy about playing HKO that I started to write a blog about everything I experienced my first day. After I published it, I immediately had to delete the entry due to the fact that I re-read the non disclosure agreement that comes along with playing HKO CB. I was about to e-mail Abby and ask if I could post some screenshots, when I checked the Hello Kitty Online Community and LittleToki beat me to it — thanks LittleToki!
Anyway, here is what I wanted to share:
I started off a little rough. I have a Mac. HKO requires Windows. Hmmm… Simple enough. I called my brother Ed (who is a genius) to help me set up my Macbook. He made it seem like it was going to be very easy partitioning my hard drive through Apple’s Boot Camp and installing Windows… Oh boy! Was he wrong! I stayed up all last night trying to get my Mac to be more PC — in the name of Hello Kitty, of course. With no luck, I went to sleep and called him when I awoke. I mean, look at the error message I kept getting:

Actually, that was only one of many. I reminded him that people in China were probably already getting a head start on me too. He decided that Boot Camp was not the way to go. Instead, I downloaded a trial version of Parallels and the rest is history..
I have never played an MMORPG before, but know many people who have an addiction… Like buying multiple accounts so he can build up a few characters. Ed gave me one advice, “Do not get attached to your character.” He is right… But my character is going to be soooo cuuute!
The first thing I did was walk around and explore the area. I also looked at other people around me to see what they were doing. The graphics are so incredibly cute! There is so much creativity, design, imagination and talent in what I saw — and I only saw Sanrio Harbour and Florapolis. I believe I will know the names of many (if not all) of the Sanrio characters by heart. This game is really inspiring to me and makes me want to create something that will make people smile.
Here are some screenshots of my progress. That is my character information and inventory interfaces. So far, I have learned how to accept and complete various quests, gain back my life/health, gain energy, fight starfish (don’t worry, the starfish just become very dizzy, Sanrio does not promote violence and fighting does not increase your skill level)… The basics I guess.

I have no pet… Nor do I have a farm, belong to a guild, have a house… But I am learning… You have to crawl before you walk.
Current Map Area of where you are. The right side has an info panel that you can check and uncheck boxes to show you where the NPC’s (non-playing characters) are located, where you can shop, locations of other players…

HKO World Map showing Sanrio Harbour and Florapolis (I know it says Sanrio Harbour but I think my computer was acting up)… Those are the two places I have currently been to.

Anyway, I am having so much fun playing the game — endless fun, for real. I cannot wait till it goes live and I can share this experience with my kittitastic friends! For more screenshots and artwork, check out Hello Kitty Online’s Downloads Area — you will not be disappointed.
Things I have fond extremely usefull:
- Tutorials
- Chat — just ask somebody for help — everyone was so nice and eager to offer assistance
- If all else fails, I ask Ed

I’m anxiously awaiting my order of Had A Glass 2009, which is the 2009 version of the book I recommended back in March. Based on the extremely high quality of the wines chosen from last year, I will have to say that it will be difficult for this book not to provide some excellent choices for wine.
Speaking of excellent choices in wine, I was incredibly lucky to get my hands on a couple bottles of Inniskillin ‘Discovery Series’ Chenin Blanc (2005). If you see this wine, buy it. It is incredibly tasty, but the supply is rather limited. With that said, Earl’s does have it on their wine list, so you can buy a bottle there.
In other news, I also purchased the Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Supplement for Star Wars Saga Edition. From my reading so far, it adds a great deal of information to increase the coolness of your game. The more I take a look at supplements and the like for SWSE, I’m finding that Wizards is doing an excellent job with the support for this title.

Just when I thought I was pretty much finished with playing HKO, they go and make a contest with Hello Kitty goodies as prizes! Which means I will still be playing today, tomorrow, the day after and another day after… Or until I farm and hunt the things I need to in order to win some Hello Kitty goodies.

Realtime Associates, Inc. is a game developer with a long history. They were founded in the days of the Intellivision, and over the last 20+ years, they’ve been involved with 85 different games across almost every game platform known to man. Dave Warhol, the company’s president and founder, put Realtime together originally to focus on in-game audio, “specializing in sound effects and music for computer games.” As such, it’s no surprise that today, Warhol and Realtime have announced a new type o

I’ve got a very exciting weekend coming up.
Before the weekend starts however, I have the final ‘midterm’ for my Philosophy class. I know I was complaining earlier about how philosophy hurts my brain (which it does), but I’m really glad I had the opportunity to take the class. I was able to learn a few new things and I was also able to find ways to help understand why I hold certian beliefs and defend things that I believe. I’m sort of disapointed that the course is over, as there are several subjects that we didn’t have the opportunity to cover that I feel would have been really interesting to cover (for example, we only had a single class on Metaphysics).
The course itself was presented in an interesting manner, utilizing popular movies to illustrate philosophical concepts, which I think really helped solidify my understanding. The movies that we watched were “Waking Life”, “The Matrix”, “Bruce Almighty”, and “Being John Malkovich”. I really enjoyed the format and I am disapointed that we were not able to cover “The Matrix Reloaded” and the metaphysical concepts that are presented there, as I think that potentially could be extremely interesting.
Onto this weekend!
Saturday is Free RPG Day. What is it? Much like Free Comic Book Day, members of the industry prepare special items to give away to help introduce the hobby to a new generation. This is the second year of the event and I hope that it becomes as successful as its comic counterpart. I’ve been organizing events at Happy Harbor Comics volume 2 and 3 to assist with the flow of the day. If you’ve ever had the inclination to give an RPG a try, please come out. We have short (1-2 hour) games running throughout the day using various different settings, which barely scratches the surface of what is being given away (or what is available).
On Sunday, Emily and I are going to Cirque du Soleil’s Saltimbanco, which is very exciting. We have fantastic seats, which I’m really hoping work well. This will be my third Cirque show, the others being La Nouba and Varekai. I’ve really enjoyed the other shows I’ve seen, so this should be no different. Also, later this summer, Emily and I will be seeing O during our trip to Las Vegas.
Anyway, I’m going to have a busy weekend, but it should be some fun.
